New tap-to-pay technology enhances convenience and security for users

The Town of Oakville will begin upgrading all pay-by-plate parking machines this summer to enhance convenience, security, and service reliability for users. Over the next few months, 58 machines will be modernized with 5G cellular technology and a new tap-to-pay feature.

The new tap-to-pay payment system uses updated encryption technology to enhance the safety and security of a user’s payment information.

Alongside these upgrades, the Town will be implementing new hourly parking fees on all pay-by-plate parking machines, parking meters and on the HONK mobile parking app. All new fees are aligned with the Council-approved 2025 Rates and Fees Schedule. The full list of parking rates by location can be found on the Paid Street Parking page.

Background

  • Hourly and daily parking rate increases were approved by Council as part of the 2024 Budget
  • Implementation was timed to coincide with the pay-by-plate parking machine upgrade project as existing machines required on-site servicing to reprogram rates.
