Make the most of June and enjoy free programs and activities throughout Oakville

Join the Town of Oakville and community partners in welcoming summer with a month full of opportunities to learn, participate and connect through free programs and activities. Residents are invited to celebrate National Indigenous History Month, Pride Month, Recreation and Parks Month, and Seniors Month through events and activities designed to raise awareness and foster community connection.

National Indigenous History Month

  • Learn about Treaty 22 through permanent educational signs at Erchless Estate, Sovereign House and Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre as part of the Debwewin Project.
  • Visit the Debwewin: The Truth Project exhibition at the Oakville Museum’s Erchless Estate to gain insight into past and present Treaty relationships in what is now Oakville. The exhibition is on display throughout June.
  • Attend a special screening of Sweet Summer Pow Wow—an Indigenous coming-of-age romance—on June 21 at 7:30 p.m., presented by the Oakville Film Festival at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Visit Oakville Film Festival website for details and to purchase a pass.
  • Join an interactive Family Storytime with Anishinaabe author and illustrator Jennifer Faria on June 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Oakville Museum.
  • Visit the orange crosswalk at Thomas and Church streets, which honours the children who were taken from their families and forced to attend residential schools. The site also features a Moccasin Identifier Project design and an interpretive sign that encourages reflection and learning.
  • Oakville Public Library (OPL) will host two Moccasin Identifier Storytimes at Central Branch, along with a special Reading Wonders program on June 8 led by Stephen Paquette, a member of the Wikwemikong First Nation and local Indigenous Knowledge Guide.
  • Walk one of Oakville’s two Moccasin Trails to explore the history of the lands from an Indigenous perspective.  
  • Explore Tannery Park’s Moccasin Identifier and outdoor classroom and the “Rooted in the Land” history wall.

Pride Month

  • Display or wear a rainbow to show your support. The progress rainbow flag will fly at Town Hall throughout June in support of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
  • Walk with pride along one of Oakville’s rainbow crosswalks located on Lakeshore Road at the intersections of Navy Street, Kerr Street, and Bronte Road.  
  • Create a Pride T-shirt at the OPL's Creation Zone and join a special online presentation celebrating the lasting contributions of 2SLGBTQIA+ history in Canada. Visit the OPL website for resources, reading lists and more!

Recreation and Parks Month

  • Participate in free drop-in recreation and culture programs. Visit the Drop-In Programs page to browse opportunities and reserve your spot today.
  • Explore local parks and open spaces, including splash pads, dog parks, trails and more. Oakville offers more than 1,700 hectares of parkland, nearly 250 km of trails and over 200 parks.
  • Join the ParticipACTION Community Challenge and help Oakville compete for $100,000 to support local physical activity initiatives. The more Oakville organizations and individuals sign up and participate, the bigger the town’s chance of winning.
  • Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the town’s Heritage Trail system, featuring over 80 story stations across five trail routes. 
  • Borrow a park pass from OPL. Passes are available in branch on a first-come, first-served basis and have a seven-day loan period with no holds or renewals.  

Seniors Month

  • Oakville’s five seniors centres provide welcoming, accessible spaces for older adults. Learn more about the town’s Seniors Services
  • Visit the town’s Drop-In Programs page to browse to browse opportunities focused on seniors.
  • Attend the Seniors Services Housing Fair Symposium on June 17 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre. This event is free however registration is required by calling 905-815-5960. 
  • Join a Seniors Month Celebration at OPL’s Iroquois Ridge Branch or create a custom mug at Glen Abbey Branch using the Cricut machine. Visit the OPL website to register and explore more.
