Have an outdoor spring project? Check to see if you need a town permit before you start

Tuesday, April 15, 2025

As spring outdoor projects and construction ramps up, the Town of Oakville reminds residents, businesses and contractors to check if they need a permit before starting work that impacts public spaces. These spaces include town-owned land, including walkways, roads, boulevards, ditches, and driveway aprons (the area between the property line/sidewalk and street).

Securing the appropriate permits helps maintain community standards, ensures public safety and keeps projects aligned with existing town regulations.

Common permits include:

  • Development Engineering Permits – Required for excavation, driveway modifications, and temporary street occupation.
  • A-Frame Sign Permits – Needed for businesses placing signage in Business Improvement Areas.
  • Outdoor Display and Merchandise Permits – For placing decorative items or selling goods on sidewalks.
  • Oversized/Overweight Vehicle Permits – Required for transporting large loads beyond legal limits.
  • Other permits – Includes filming, newspaper boxes, and patio extensions.

Comprehensive details on these and other permits, including application forms and fee schedules, are available on the Road Corridor Permits page.

Building permits for home renovations

When planning home renovations, remember that most construction and demolition projects in Oakville require a building permit. This ensures your project complies with the Ontario Building Code and the Town of Oakville's Zoning By-law

Common projects requiring a building permit include secondary units (for example, basement apartments), additions to a house, decks, pools, sheds, cabanas and gazebos.

Starting construction without a permit is illegal and can lead to penalties. Even if your project doesn't require a building permit, it must still comply with zoning regulations. Be safe and build smart by first reaching out to the Town of Oakville before beginning any work. Town staff are here to assist you. More details are available on the Building Permits page.
